Project 1: mStroke – Academic Research Project – UTC

Project Summary:
mStroke was a collaborative project between the Computer Science and Physical Therapy departments at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, along with research feedback from real post-stroke patients (PSPs) and their primary care physicians (PCPs). The iOS application was meant to give the PSPs the independence to perform rehabilitation exercises they would typically do with their PCP in the comfort of their own home and allow the data results from the exercises to be transferred from their application to the PCP’s database via the PSP’s internet connection.
User Personas:
There are two users of this application, but the primary design was focused on the PSPs and the usability of the product in their home without the assistance of their PCP.
The main persona that I focused on was the following:
- Age: 50+
- Living Status: Alone, or with limited support
- Rehabilitation Status: Has had prior experience with PCP in relation to rehabilitation exercises so they know what they need to do when they are home with the application.
The Design:
- Color: Warm colors were used due to the research I had done once put on the project. I had found that even though many of the elderly drift toward cool colors in relation to color recognition, they were more likely to be able to tell the difference in the warm color spectrum. Yellow wasn’t used to keep the text to background contrast the same.
- Large Buttons and Text: Much of the screen is taken up by buttons, because of the limited mobility a stroke can cause for individuals, especially the elderly. I made the buttons as large as possible so the PSP doesn’t have optimal mobility can still activate the linked button and distinguish different exercises with the color palette.
- Images: The images were used to show the type of exercises the PSP will do during each of the exercises. I wanted to use the images as a confirmation that the button corresponds to the exercise they want to do. I also wanted to add an image to show the exercise just in case the PSP can’t read the text on the button.
Tools Used for Design:
Adobe Illustrator (buttons and images) and Xcode (for iOS application development)
